Bethnal Green’s story is one rich in variety. It is one of crime and poverty, but also one of resilience and survival. Despite phases of social change it displays a consistency born of its own character, and indeed its own folklore.
This tour features site-specific readings from authors who have sought to engage with the human currents of Bethnal Green and to capture its unique flavour. These include Iain Sinclair and George Orwell, as well as less familiar authors such as Alexander Baron and Arthur Morrison.
Please meet me outside Shoreditch High Street Overground Station: look out for my blue 'Footprints of London' hi-vis waistcoat. The tour finishes near Bethnal Green Underground Station.
Concessions apply to students, the unwaged, those aged 65 and over, and children aged 6-15 (who MUST be accompanied by a paying adult); children 5 and under go free with a paying adult.
The tour will go ahead regardless of the weather (unless there is an extreme weather warning). Please dress appropriately.
